Second in the UK Recruitment for Belfast Trust Critical Care Research Team – PHIND Study

Our BHSCT Critical Care team are the second highest recruiter in the UK for the PHIND Study. The team, based in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast out-recruited 31 other sites by recruiting 93 patients to the study.

Only falling short of first place as the team paused recruitment to PHIND so they could concentrate on urgent public health COVID studies like REMAP-CAP during the pandemic.

The study target was 515 across 33 sites. Total BHSCT Recruitment accounted for 18% of the total and 387.5% of original target (24).

An astonishing achievement for our BHSCT Critical Care team. Showing yet again Northern Ireland can punch well above our weight in national trials. (NI accounts for only 3% of the population of the UK).

PHIND: Clinical evaluation of a POC assay to identify Phenotypes IN the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome is funded by Innovate UK and sponsored by Queen’s University Belfast with Chief Investigator Professor Danny McAuley.

It is a multi-centre, prospective, observational study for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure (AHRF). The purpose of the study is to prospectively define hyper and hypo-inflammatory phenotypes of ARDS and determine clinical outcomes associated with each phenotype.
