Professor Peter Passmore’s Retirement
March 1, 2024
Professor Peter Passmore has been a pillar of Geriatric medicine for 30+ years. He graduated from Queens University, Belfast with a BSc in Psychology in 1978 then went on to graduate from QUB Medicine in 1981, achieving his MD in 1987. After a year as a Senior Lecturer in Sydney, Australia, Peter returned to Belfast to establish the first ever memory clinic in Northern Ireland at the Belfast City Hospital, a clinic that still runs to this day.
Professor Bernadette McGuiness who has worked alongside Peter in Health and Social Care, since 1998, and co-chairs the NICRN Neurodegenerative special interest group, states that she, “was truly inspired with how Peter treated older people. The multidisciplinary team and career possibilities led me to pursue a career in geriatric medicine… I was one of the 20 or so MD/PhD students he supervised, and I enjoyed my MD so much I went on to complete a PhD under Peter’s supervision.”
Peter who is an Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador, has over 260 peer reviewed publications, and was one of 4 co applicants for the first, large Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS). Results from this research were listed by TIME magazine as key global research findings in 2009. Colleagues have describe Peter as kind, having a sharp scientific brain, considerate, and “a truly nice man”. He will be sorely missed by his patients, colleagues and friends across academia and Health and Social Care.
We wish you a fond farewell and happy retirement from all your colleagues at the NI Clinical Research Network and the wider Belfast Trust.
Your work will leave a legacy for generations to come.
