NICRN Diabetes Clinical Lead Changeover

April 28, 2025

Dr. Lindsay has recently concluded his six-year tenure as co-lead of the Diabetes research network and is pleased to pass the baton to his colleague, Dr. Philip Johnston. Throughout this period, the NICRN team successfully navigated the challenges posed by COVID-19 and strengthened research capacity across the region.

The network has concentrated on studying GLP-1 agents in cardiovascular outcome trials, long-term obesity treatment, and real-world outcomes in type 2 Diabetes. Additionally, we continue to contribute to UK studies on incident and high-risk type 1 Diabetes research. We are eagerly anticipating the results of the TOPAZ study, which investigated the impact of novel therapies on Osteogenesis Imperfecta and will be presented later this year.

Dr. Johnston will lead an emerging portfolio of studies, including continuous glucose technology in cystic fibrosis-related diabetes and UK Early Detection Initiatives for pancreatic cancer in diabetes and in addition will hope to attract observational  endocrine studies particularly adrenal/pituitary. The Diabetes research network is well-positioned to advance clinical trials in the region and looks forward to collaborating with new investigators in the near future.
