NICRN Diabetes team achieved FPFV to UKI-SAT within 4 weeks

April 1, 2026

The Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network (NICRN) & The Belfast Trust has successfully recruited its first participant within 4-weeks of the opening of its new clinical trial, National Study of Adrenal Tumours (UKI-SAT) in conjunction with the Society of Endocrinology (SFE). UKI-SAT aims to bring together information of a large cohort of patients across the UK and Ireland who have adrenal tumours, including rare cancers such as adrenocortical carcinoma and phaeochromocytomas/paragangliomas. By collecting detailed information on diagnosis, treatment and outcomes, the study seeks to better understand survival rates and improve knowledge of these rare conditions. This early recruitment demonstrates the value of streamlined study set-up processes, and strong engagement between clinical teams and research infrastructure. The rapid recruitment also highlights the research team’s proactive approach in ensuring prompt contacting of Participants.

The Principal Investigator (PI) is Dr Philip Johnston and the Sub-PI is Dr Ian Wallace, Regional Centre for Endocrinology & Diabetes Royal Victoria Hospital, BHSCT.

This study is ongoing and more participants are planned in the upcoming weeks.

NICRN would like to thank all staff involved in making this achievement possible and looks forward to continued recruitment and collaboration as the study progresses. We would especially like to thank Tamla Ervine from the BHSCT R&D office and Louise Scullion from NICRN for their efforts in study initiation. Additionally, a massive thank you to all the Participants that have enrolled.
