BHSCT Critical Care are running INFINIT
September 3, 2025
Congratulations to the Critical Care team on opening a new study INFINIT – INterFeron gamma to prevent Infection in INTensive care units.
Interferon gamma is a natural protein found in humans, and helps stimulate our immune system. INFINIT aims to find out if interferon gamma reduces or prevents infection in critically ill patients at high risk.
Patients can receive either interferon gamma (IFNg) or placebo – sterile water injection, three subcutaneous injections over a week administered by the blinded team in critical care, however IMP preparation must be done by an unblinded team – this has been kindly facilitated by our wider NICRN team.
Congratulations also to the BHSCT Critical Care team who have been able to recruit the first participant to INFINIT trial within the first 2 weeks of opening in RVH Belfast Critical Care Unit.
Thanks to the efforts and flexibility of all NICRN nurses on the blinded and unblinded team, Clinical Trials Pharmacist Brian Wells, and the Principal Investigator of INFINIT study ICU Consultant Chris Nutt.
