The 2023 College of Optometrists diploma ceremony, one of the highlights of the College’s annual calendar, took place at Central Hall, Westminster on Tuesday 7 November.

The stunning Grade II listed building, overlooking Westminster Abbey Hall, provided a palatial setting for this year’s ceremony, welcoming new members to the College and also awarding three new Life Fellowships.

Professor Jackson FCOptom DipTp(IP) was awarded a Life Fellowship for his contribution to the profession, the College had this to say,

“Prof Jackson who has been a hospital optometrist for almost 40 years has pursued a career in secondary care optometry , working in teaching hospitals, universities and professional colleges in Northern Ireland, England and Australia. He has held positions at BSO and HSCB and served as an editorial board member on Optometry in Practice (OiP) for 23 years. Jonathan has co-authored more than 130 peer-reviewed papers. In 2017, he was awarded an American Academy of Optometry Low Vision Research Diploma. He has recently been appointed as the Director of the Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network.”

Jonathan when asked for comment said,

“ I am very honoured to have been nominated for this award. Receiving a Fellowship award for having been involved in aspects of vision science, optometry and ophthalmology, which I truly love, almost seems unfair. Anything I have achieved over a 40 year timespan has been achieved as a result of the dedication and commitment shown to me by colleagues, staff and indeed family, who have encouraged and supported me along my chosen career path”

Prof Jackson’s colleagues at the Clinical Research Network and the Optometry Department at the Royal Victoria Hospital wish him congratulations on such a prestigious and well deserved accolade.
